The ATR 72-500, introduced in the late 1990s, brought a range of refinements aimed at improving comfort, performance, and reliability. It uses PW127F engines, offering quieter operation, better fuel burn, and improved dispatch reliability. Cruise speed increased to around 275 knots (about 510 km/h), helping airlines reduce block times.
The cabin was redesigned with better soundproofing, improved lighting, and more modern interiors, enhancing the passenger experience. Seating is usually around 70 to 74 passengers. Avionics were also upgraded compared to earlier versions, though still not as advanced as the later glass cockpit of the -600.
For many years, the -500 was the backbone of ATR’s production and is still widely used by regional airlines today. It remains respected for its balance of efficiency, comfort, and ruggedness.
