The ATR 72-200 is closely related to the -100 but was optimized for operations in hot and high conditions. It features improved PW124B engines that provide better takeoff performance at airports with high temperatures or elevations, where engine power is reduced.
Passenger capacity remains around 70 seats, and the aircraft kept the same basic airframe and systems as the -100. The -200 became popular with airlines in regions such as South America, Africa, and parts of Asia, where environmental conditions demand stronger performance.
Like the -100, most ATR 72-200 aircraft have been phased out of frontline passenger service but are still valuable in the cargo market due to their solid structure and economical operation.
